RecyclingRecycle…It’s Easy!

Recycling is a great way for individuals and businesses alike to demonstrate their concern for the environment. Recycling helps to conserve resources, landfill space and energy while reducing pollution. The Arc of Washington County, Inc. vocational services program embarked on the collection of recyclables in 1989. The program provides work experience for the developmentally disabled, as well as a valuable service to the community.

Recycling BinRecycling Basics

Simply save your office paper, newspapers, phonebooks, cardboard, plastic containers and aluminum cans, and drop them off at our Recycling Center on Florida Avenue. You can also sign up for curbside pick-up service for a minimal annual fee. Help the environment by joining your neighbors in your area's curbside recycling program. For more information on curbside pick-up, please call 301-797-0052 or 301-739-7519.

Helpful Hints

  • Mixed Office Paper: Examples of mixed office paper include computer paper, office stationary, envelopes, junk mail, copy paper-both white and colored. Green or blue computer paper that is tested by us to be free of ground wood is also O.K. No sticky notes, post-its, or carbons please.
  • Newspapers, Phonebooks, Magazines, and Books: Tightly bundled newspapers in grocery bags are preferable but not necessary.
  • Corrugated Cardboard & Misc. Cardboard: Look for the ribbed wavy layer or soft cardboard such as cereal boxes, tissue, and cracker type boxes. Please break down, flatten and stack.
  • Plastic: Plastic bottles with #1 or #2 recycling triangles only please. (Triangles are located on the bottom of containers.) Please discard any leftover liquids and remove lids. Rinsing materials helps to prevent the attraction of bees. Plastic soda bottles, milk & water jugs, as well as laundry product bottles, are collected.
  • Aluminum Cans: Please be sure all cans are rinsed out, as they can attract bees. Only aluminum; no bi-metal, please. Hint: Check the side of cans with a magnet to be sure they are aluminum - they won't be attracted. Crushing helps save space but isn't necessary.
