In the 1970's, the Adult Residential Program began in Smithsburg at the
Kemp Horn Home which housed up to 30 individuals with developmental
disabilities, and was one of the first of its kind in Washington County to
provide supports to families of special needs children.
Capabilities
Today, the Adult Residential Program has over 50 homes to meet the
needs of those seeking community placement opportunities. The program offers
living arrangements that are situated within town or within a more rural
setting. Each home supports one to eight individuals. The focus is to
provide all the necessary supports to meet each person's needs so that the
persons served will lead successful and fulfilling lives in their local
community. Supports offered in the program include a team of residential
support staff, nurses, behavioral support, and specialized consultants such
as speech, occupational, and physical therapists as well as nutritional
consultation. Residential support staff members provide assistance in
activities of daily living, recreation, socialization, transportation,
health and safety, plus skills training. All plans of supports are developed
under a team approach to assist and advocate on all levels of need. The
Adult Residential Program is funded and licensed through the Developmental
Disabilities Administration. Persons who wish to be considered for the Adult
Residential Program are referred by DDA.
Respite care available on limited basis through Residential Services.
